BC residents who are eligible for the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters (SAFER) may apply to receive monthly rent subsidies. The benefit is a non-taxable reimbursement for rent already paid and is paid at the end of each month.

You are eligible if you meet all of the following criteria:

  • You are 60 years old or older.

  • You have lived in BC for a full 12-month period.

  • You and your spouse meet Canadian citizenship requirements.

  • You pay more than 30% of your gross, before tax, monthly household income toward rent.

You are not eligible if:

·       You live in subsidized housing.

·       You live in a residential care facility funded by the Ministry of Health.

·       You live in co-operative housing and are a shareholder.

·       You or your family receive income assistance through the BC Employment and Assistance Act or the Employment and Assistance for Persons with Disabilities Act (excluding Medical Services only).

To apply for SAFER, you will need the following supporting documentation

  • Proof of income (tax return)

  • Proof of Age

  • Proof of Rent

  • Bank Information (for direct deposit)
